New flickr slideshow plugin (v3.0), new website

We are excited to let you know we have just released version 3.0 of the Flickr Slideshow plugin. It is available for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.6, and has a major performance boost compared to older versions of the plugin.

For this new version, we went back to the drawing table and started from scratch focussing on the following issues:

  • DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED PERFORMANCE – Optimized calls to the Flickr API, resulting in a dramatically improved performance of the plugin. Instead of waiting for more than half a minute on initial download, the new plugin is finished in a second. It can even handle large sets without any problem or noticeable increase of delay.
  • LEAN AND MEAN – The phpFlickr class is replaced by a self written php class, which means less PHP code to process.
  • HIGHSLIDE IMAGE VIEWER – The plugin now uses Highslide as image viewer. Highslide is replacing slimbox as well as triptracker. The reason is that Highslide is more flexible and highly configurable. In this version of the plugin there are a few options to tweak highslide, but they will be increased in future versions of the plugin.
  • AUTHENTICATION – The new plugin has a much smoother authentication process… But more importantly, it now is documented! (See "installing the plugin")
  • NEW WEBSITE – Because the old website was getting a bit messy and out of date, we put up a new website. The focus of this new website is to give better and more detailed information about the plugin and how to use it.
  • NEW LICENSE – The plugin is now released under a “Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0” license. This means that when you are using the plugin on a non-commercial website, the plugin is still free to use.
